New Year's

We said goodbye to 2010 in Hawaii last night, and arrived in New York this morning in 2011.  More details about our amazing vacation will follow in an upcoming post.  For now, I am flooded on this January first with all the events and details that made this past year the best I've had so far.  I will remember 2010 as the year that I watched my brother graduate from basic training, and the year that I got my very own puppy.  I'll look back on the decision to stay at my school after finishing Teach for America, knowing that I wouldn't be the same person without this group of kids and this set of challenges.  It was the year that I decided to marry my best friend and actually went out and bought a wedding dress.  I'll remember relaxing on the beaches of Hilton Head and Hawaii, and spending time with people I love.

Years from now I won't look back on 2010 and think about the little pains or gripes, or even the more serious problems that sometimes arose.  Scratch that, maybe I will.  But I'll be laughing and learning, not whining or regretting.  I think that's the measure of a good year: looking back on missteps with humor and humility, while rejoicing in success and treasuring gratefully the people who made you happy.  Even now as the newspapers hammer home that times are tough, most Americans should be able to do this given a little love in their lives and a bit of honest perspective.  Needless to say that by any measure and in no uncertain terms, my year was amazing.

And so my resolution is the same as it is each January: to make this year the best year of my life.  I haven't failed yet, and I've made the same resolution for half a decade.  Twenty-ten will be pretty hard to beat, but I have no intention of breaking my record now.

Happy New Year.
